How to set a boundary without starting a fight

A script for saying what you need clearly, without overexplaining or apologizing for it.

Two people having a focused conversation
Keep this in mindA boundary is not a punishment. It is information about what you need to stay safe and connected.

If this feels bigger than it should, that does not mean you are doing it wrong. Most hard things become more manageable when you stop trying to solve every part at once.

A simple plan

  1. Describe the behavior, how it affects you, and what you will do next time.
  2. Use a calm, short sentence and resist adding ten reasons to make it acceptable.
  3. Repeat the boundary if needed and follow through on the part you can control.

Make the next step smaller

Choose the easiest action on this page and give it ten minutes. You can stop, adjust, or ask someone to join you after that. Small progress still counts, especially on a hard day.
